No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
As the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process began in West Bengal on Tuesday, panic gripped parts of the state after a man from Agarpara reportedly died by suicide due to fear of the NRC. The deceased, identified as 57-year-old Pradeep Kar, was a resident of Mahajati Nagar in Panihati, North 24 Parganas. His body was found hanging from a noose early Tuesday morning. Police from Khardah station reached the spot soon after and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
Family members claimed that Pradeep had been deeply anxious about the ongoing NRC process. A suicide note recovered from his residence reportedly read, “NRC is responsible for my death.” The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with locals blaming fear and misinformation surrounding the process.
